Dorothy Dandridge accomplished many things in her short life; she was the first Black woman nominated for the best-actress Oscar and the first Black woman on the cover of Life magazine. But she was also plagued by ghosts. In her perceptive, often humorous autobiography, Everything and Nothing: The Dorothy Dandridge Tragedy, published in 1970—five years after her death—Dandridge and cowriter Earl Conrad lay out her search for love in candid, often luscious prose. “If it is possible for a human being to be like a haunted house,” she writes, “maybe that would be me.”
The primary ghost in Dandridge’s life was her only child, Harolyn Suzanne “Lynn” Nicholas, born in 1943 during her first marriage to dancing legend Harold Nicholas. Lynn was severely intellectually disabled, a condition Dandridge blamed on her delayed birth (Nicholas had gone golfing and left her without a car). “She’d hug me tight, crushing into my breasts,” Dandridge writes. “I have known quite a few men, since then, but I tell you, you cannot get that feeling from anything else in the world. Dorothy Dandridge’s daughter Harolyn Nicholas
Harolyn Suzanne Nicholas was born to actress Dorothy Dandridge and her husband dancer Harold Nicholas (of the Nicholas Brothers) on September 2, 1943. Harold was inattentive of Dorothy and when she was in labor he dropped her off at her sister-in-law’s home while he went out to play golf. Dorothy wanted to wait until he returned before they went to the hospital but when the pains became too intense they left without out him. They had to take a neighbor’s car since Harold took their car.
Dorothy’s delivery was strenuous and Harolyn was born with brain damage called cerebral anoxia, possibly due to her delayed birth or the use of forceps during her birth. At first she didn’t think anything was wrong with Harolyn, but at the age of two she was still not speaking. Dorothy took her to a doctor who confirmed that she was mentally disabled. The doctor advised Dorothy to give Harolyn up and have another child but she refused.
While dealing with this Harold was largely absent and having affairs throughout their relationship. By 1948

Harolyn Suzanne Nicholas was Dorothy Dandridge's only child, born in the late actress's marriage to the late tap dancer Harold Nicholas. She lived with a mental disability that defined her life and riddled her mother with guilt.
Harolyn Suzanne Nicholas drew her first breath in 1943, a year after her parents, Dorothy Dandridge and Harold Nicholas, tied the knot. Her mother was ecstatic when she arrived; Dorothy saw giving birth to her daughter as a "true miracle."
However, Harolyn was born with brain damage, which meant no matter how old she became, she would always have the mentality of a four-year-old. Eventually, her mother could no longer afford to care for her, and the consequences were heartbreaking.
The night Dorothy went into labor, she was at home, bearing the pains of Harolyn's pending arrival. Her husband, Harold, had taken their only vehicle to play golf, and she refused to go to the hospital without him.
The pain intensified, and event
