Early life
James Tjahaja Riady was born in 1957 in Jakarta, to Mochtar Riady and Suryawati Lidya who were of Chinese-Indonesian descent. As a child, James was sent by his father to study in Macau. Since childhood, he was taught to be independent. After 4 years in Macau, he returned to Australia to continue his studies. Riady studied at the University of Melbourne in Australia.[4 Jakarta. Papua looks blue from up above. Its shorelines and mountains are covered with verdant forest. The river that runs across its land resembles a thin brush of white paint drawn on a canvas of blue. Abundant minerals, notably copper and gold, lie beneath its fertile grounds. Still, hidden by the luscious landscape are a large portion of Papua’s population living below the poverty line. A lot of money from the central government has flowed into both Papua and West Papua. But they are still the poorest in Indonesia. The latest survey from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) showed that 915,000 people in Papua, or 27 percent of its population, are living below the poverty line. In West Papua, 213,000 people live below the poverty line—23 percent of its population. In comparison, the national average is 9.6 percent. The provinces with the richest natural resources have the poorest people. How ironic. ycoon James Riady made it to Boston in September last year when President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono delivered a speech in front of US and Indonesian businesspeople. Riady could re-enter the US after the US State Department through the country’s embassy here, waived an eight-year ban on him. At the same time, two Indonesian generals, Lt. Gen. Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin and Maj. Gen. Pramono Edi Wibowo, had to stay home after the embassy rejected their visas although they applied for them as There was no official statement on the reason for rejecting the visa application for the two generals, but speculation emerged that Sjafrie, today announced as deputy defense minister, was barred due to his alleged involvement in a human rights violations in Dili, East Timor, and in the bloody May 1998 riots, while Pramono, the Indonesian Army special squad Kopassus commander, was not provided a visa because of his squad’s past involvement in rights abuses.
