Johann Strauss I (1804-1849)
Johann Strauss the Elder, Europe's leading conductor and composer of dance music and the first of the great international 'pop' idols, was born in Vienna on 14 March 1804, the son of a humble innkeeper. A largely self-taught musician, the 13-year-old Strauss reluctantly undertook an apprenticeship in bookbinding, studying the violin in his spare time.
He also played in the popular orchestra of Michael Pamer (1782-1827), leaving it when he was only fifteen to join a Trio recently formed by another ex-member of Pamer's band, Joseph Lanner (1801-43). This ensemble grew to a small string orchestra under Lanner's direction until, in 1824, demand for its services necessitated the formation of a second orchestra, under 'vice-conductor' Strauss. It was Lanner and Strauss who, with their contrasting styles, became the true architects of the Viennese Waltz.
In September 1825, Strauss departed with some of Lanner's musicians to form his own orchestra. Such was the fame which he brought to himself and Vienna that in 1846 the Austrian Emperor bestowed up

Johann Baptist Strauss I (; German:[ˈjoːhanbapˈtɪstˈʃtʁaʊs]; 14 March 1804 – 25 September 1849), also known as Johann Strauss Sr., the Elder or the Father (German: Johann Strauß Vater), was an Austrian composer of the Romantic Period. He was famous for his light music, namely waltzes, polkas, and galops, which he popularized alongside Joseph Lanner, thereby setting the foundations for his sons—Johann, Josef and Eduard—to carry on his musical dynasty. He is best known for his composition of the Radetzky March (named after Joseph Radetzky von Radetz).
Life and work
Johann Strauss was born in Leopoldstadt (now in Vienna). Strauss's parents, Franz Borgias Strauss (10 October 1764 – 5 April 1816) and Barbara Dollmann (3 December 1770 – 28 August 1811), were innkeepers (Zum heiligen Florian). He was born a Roman Catholic. Strauss had a Jewish grandfather, Johann Michael Strauss (1720–1800), who converted to Catholicism.[1]

Johann Baptist Strauss sr. was born on March 14, 1804 in Vienna, Leopoldstadt. He grow up with his sister as son of a beer landlord in a small restaurant at the Danube channel. Boatmen from different countries came here, who made folklore music. His mother died in 1811 and the father was found as a water corpse in the Danube in 1816. Possibly suicide due to insolvency. Johann Strauss sr. was trained to bookbinder until 1822. And additionally he learned to play violin.
He bacame a member of the well-known orchestra of Michael Pamer and became acquainted to the 3 years older violonist Joseph Lanner. As Joseph Lanner formed his own orchestra consisting of three musicians Johann Strauss sr. also became a member, he played the Viola. The quartet played at Viennese restaurants, the "Rebhuhn", a restaurant frequntly visited by Franz Schubert. Lanner had many engagements and so he was able to increase his group to a small dance orchestra (1825).
