Sarah Farina: ‘My body is political’

Sarah Farina sprinkles positivity over the darkest bass. What you’ll hear from Sarah Farina’s sets is seamlessly blended bass-heavy footwork and futuristic beats, with fearless forays through R&B and UK Funky. It’s inclusive, forward-thinking and unrestrained. It’s a genre-rejecting style that she’s named rainbow bass. Led by the early releases of Aphex Twin, Timbaland and Boards of Canada into the dark clubs of Berlin, she was a driver of the 2010 formation of Through My Speakers. The event production collective has grown to become a burgeoning record label, thrusting underground producers and DJs onto the decks of progressive club nights and the playlists of bass fans across Europe and beyond.

This interview took place during Nyege Nyege Festival 2018, where SHAPE was one of the partners of the event and Sarah Farina one of the SHAPE Platform performers.

Farina’s multi-chromatic, guerilla DJ sets, mixing jungle, juke, hip hop, and UK garage and funky, are driven by futuristic breakbeats and formidable basslines and have been broadcast via Red Bull Music Academy Radio Berlin, Groove Magazine, and Boiler Room Berlin. Over the past several years, she has supported Hyperdub label head Kode9 with Cooly G at Berlin’s now-defunct Horst Kreuzberg club and played alongside established artists such as Lunice, DJ Rashad, Scratcha DVA, Disclosure at Trouw Amsterdam, and with drum and bass producer Darren White aka dBridge at the decennial anniversary of Exit Records alongside Om Unit and SP:MC.

She is also a member of the Through My Speakers collective, an international network of music addicts, DJs, and musicians predicated on the gospel of positive vibes that hosts diverse events throughout the year.

Known for her flawless selections and epic basslines, Sarah Farina is one of the usual suspects in the Berlin underground bass scene. Her potpourri of tunes is known and loved for being wildly inclusive with a leaning towards ‘ bass-heavy footwork and futuristic beats’.

She indulges us in a conversation about her record label ‘Through My Speakers’, on her process & the evolving nature of the electronic music space.

1. Tell us a little bit about how you got into music; were you brought up in a 'musical' household, and how much would you say your family's staple music has shaped your preferences/curation today?

None of my parents play an instrument but they really like music and I think the small music collection they have at home is quite good. Through them I got to know of artists like The Cure, Sade, Bob Marley and more from a young age. This is music I still listen too. When I was around 12, I wanted to play the guitar and I was lucky enough to have a friend who could teach me. That's when I got into it.
