Karl Jatho

Karl Jatho ([kaʁlˈjatʰo]; 3 February 1873 – 8 December 1933) was a German inventor and aviation pioneer, performer and public servant of the city of Hanover.

Achievements and claims to precedence over the Wright brothers

From August through November 1903, Jatho made progressively longer hops (flights) in a pusher triplane, and then a biplane, at Vahrenwalder Heide  [de] outside of Hanover. His first flight was only 18 metres (59 ft) distance at about 1 metre (3 ft 3 in) altitude. Sources differ whether his aircraft was controlled.[1][2] The earliest contemporary source suggesting that it was controlled, a newspaper article from Hannoverscher Courier   [de ] dating 1 August 1907, states that Jatho "has been working on controllable air vehicles for 12 years by now", however a legal document dated 19 November 1902 (an official decline by legal authorities to attend a legal test examination that Jatho had offered to them) appears to describ

His first flight, was only 18 metres at about 1 metre altitude, and was not controlled. Jatho eventually gave up, noting "In spite of many efforts, (I) cannot make longer or higher flights. Motor weak." With a later machine, Jatho would make successful flights around November 1903 – 60 metres at about 3–4 metres altitude, 1 month earlier than the Wright-Brothers.

He also founded a flying school and an aircraft factory, but did not have much success.

He died on 8 December 1933 in Hannover.

Grace's Guide To British Industrial History

Karl Jatho (February 3, 1873 - December 8, 1933) was a German pioneer and inventor, performer and public servant of the city of Hanover.

Allegedly, on August 18, 1903 he flew with his self-made motored gliding airplane 4 months before the first flight of the Wright Brothers, but it is claimed still two years later than Gustave Whitehead. His first attempts he made with a plane having three lifting surfaces, but switched to two surfaces soon. They were modelled after the Zanonia seed, a seed that was known for its gliding capability. In contrast to the Wright Brother's planes, the wings were flat in profile and not curved.

The plane was equipped with a single-cylinder 10 hp Buchet engine driving a two-bladed pusher propeller and made hops of up to 200 ft, flying up to 10 ft high.

He founded a flying school and a plane factory.
