Shahzad Ismaily is an American musician, producer and composer of Pakistani descent. His main instrument is bass guitar, but he also plays guitar, synthesiser and drum-kit both onstage and in the recording studio. He is active in the fields of rock, jazz and experimental music in the New York downtown scene.
Ismaily was born the son of Pakistani immigrants in the United States. He holds a master’s degree in biochemistry from Arizona State University and has travelled worldwide to study the music of different cultures, including visits to Pakistan, India, Turkey, Mexico, Japan, Indonesia, Morocco and Iceland. In Iceland, Ismaily was a key contributor to the Reykjavik music scene alongside musicians such as Valgeir Sigurdsson, Ben Frost, Nico Muhly and múm.
He plays a variety of instruments, including electric and double bass, guitar, banjo, accordion, flute, drums and electronic instruments such as Moog synthesisers. Shahzad Ismaily (born 20 June 1972 in Pennsylvania) is an American multi-instrumentalist, known mainly as a bass guitar player, and record producer. He is a member of Marc Ribot's trio Ceramic Dog since its formation in 2006. He also plays with Secret Chiefs 3 and Cosa Brava.
He is of Pakistani origin.[1]
In 2019, he released the album Dreams of Sleep and Wakes of Sound in collaboration with Laraaji and Merz.[2]
His 2023 album Love in Exile, made in collaboration with Arooj Aftab and Vijay Iyer, was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Jazz Album.[3] He also contributed to Aftab's albums Vulture Prince and Night Reign, released in 2021 and 2024 respectively.

Shahzad Ismaily ’89 received his AA from Simon’s Rock and studied biochemistry at Arizona State University. He is an accomplished and multi-instrumental musician, composer, producer, and improviser. His cross-genre collaborations include Feist, Yoko Ono, Arooj Aftab and Vijay Iyer, Laurie Anderson, and the late Lou Reed, to name only a few. He is a member of Marc Ribot’s Ceramic Dog, and runs the record label figureight records. His self-study has taken him around the world to explore the musical traditions of Pakistan, India, Mexico, Turkey, Japan, Indonesia, Morocco, Iceland and Japan. Shahzad lives in Brooklyn, NY with his daughter Anika, and mother, Malika.
