American scholar of religion
James William Fowler III (1940–2015) was an American theologian who was Professor of Theology and Human Development at Emory University. He was director of both the Center for Research on Faith and Moral Development, and the Center for Ethics until he retired in 2005. He was a minister in the United Methodist Church.[4] Fowler is best known for his book Stages of Faith, published in 1981, in which he sought to develop the idea of a developmental process in "human faith".
Life and career
Fowler was born in Reidsville, North Carolina, on October 12, 1940, the son of a Methodist minister.[4] In 1977, Fowler was appointed Associate Professor of Theology and Human Development at the Candler School of Theology at Emory University. He was later named Charles Howard Candler Professor of Theology and Human Development.[6] He died on October 16, 2015.

Raised in the family of a United Methodist Pastor, JAMES FOWLER (1940-2015) was a life-long member and ordained minister of the United Method Church. He is best known for his research in faith development theory, published in his highly influential book, Stages of Faith (1981, now in its 42nd edition). Fowler’s work had a major impact on religious education and pastoral care in the 1980s and 1990s. He also was an important contributor to the new discussion of practical theology emerging in the 1980s, which led to a revitalization of this field.

John Fowler was born at Wadsley Hall on the edge of Sheffield and privately educated locally. He then took up an engineering post at the Sheffield waterworks before moving into railway engineering. By 1839, at the age of 22, he was appointed resident engineer on the building of the Stockton and Hartlepool Railway. He then became the company's engineer, general manager and locomotive superintendent. At the age of 27 in 1844 he became an independent consulting engineer. He joined the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in the year it formed, 1847, and two years later joined the Institution of Civil Engineers. In 1850 he married Elizabeth Broadbent of Manchester. They subsequently had four sons.
