Gerald Norman Springer (February 13, 1944 – April 27, 2023) was an American broadcaster, journalist, actor, lawyer, and politician. Jerry Springer was born in Golders Green in London in 1944. His Jewish parents had escaped from Nazi Germany just three days before the outbreak of the Second World War. Tragically, Jerry's grandmothers did not escape and both were murdered in the Holocaust. He did not know what happened to them after his parents' escape, or where they died. With their deaths, all knowledge of his family's roots was also lost. Jerry first set out to discover if he could trace back the Springer family. He discovered that his great-grandfather, Abraham Springer, came from the small town of Neustettin. Documents revealed that Abraham too had to struggle against an anti-Semitic campaign of hate, one which he eventually overcame. Jerry then undertook a painful and disturbing investigation into the fate of his grandmothers. Nazi documents revealed their fate in shocking detail and Jerry traced the journeys they took, first to the ghettos and then to the death camps.
