Virginia Henderson was an educator and nurse researcher born in 1887 who developed the Need Theory focusing on 14 basic human needs. She received her nursing diploma in 1921 and taught nursing while furthering her education, earning bachelor's and master's degrees. Henderson believed nurses should help patients regain independence. Ernestine Wiedenbach was a nurse-midwife born in 1900 who developed the Helping Art of Clinical Nursing theory. The theory focuses on understanding a patient's needs, setting goals to improve their condition, and using nursing skills purposefully. Both theorists emphasized identifying patient needs and empowering patients' recovery and self-care.
