Mr. Dr. Atiur Rahman Former Governor, Bangladesh Bank
Dr. Atiur Rahman appointed as the 10th Governor of Bangladesh Bank, on May 2005 to March 15, 2016. Dr. Rahman has been a renowned economist in his varied roles as a University Professor, researcher, banker and a leader in pro-poor, environment-friendly and gender-sensitive development paradigm. Prior to his assumption of the office of the Governor, he was a Professor of Economics in the Department of Development Studies (2006-2009), University of Dhaka, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Shamunnay, a centre for excellence in development research in Bangladesh. He also served as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Unnayan Shamannay, a non-profit organization for research, development and cultural learning. His previous roles also include Director of Sonali Bank, the largest commercial bank in Bangladesh, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Janata Bank, the second largest commercial bank in the country and a long tenure as a Senior Research Fellow at the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studie

Dr. Atiur Rahman served as the 10th Governor of Bangladesh Bank, from May 01, 2009, to March 15, 2016. The defining feature of his tenure as the Governor was his decisive drive to alter the institutional objectives and ethos to support a pro-poor, inclusive, and sustainable development model through his flagship financial inclusion initiatives and environmentally benign banking initiatives. His record in taming inflation, maintaining a stable exchange rate, and enhancing foreign exchange reserves to advance financial stability in Bangladesh has been lauded domestically and internationally.Dr. Rahman made significant contributions at the 3GF conference, Rio+20, COP18, and SDG Global Compact-related international negotiations linking sustainability and socio-economic development goals. He was also a member of the UNEP Enquiry designing ‘global sustainable financing’.
