Saattai (transl. Whip) is a 2012 Indian Tamil-language drama film written and directed by M. Anbazhagan. The film features Samuthirakani and Thambi Ramaiah in pivotal roles.[1] The film's soundtrack and background score were composed by D. Imman. The shooting took place in NLC and Thiruvannamalai. The film is the first installment of the film series and was followed by a spin-off, Appa (2016), and a sequel Adutha Saattai (2019).[2] The movie was officially remade in Kannada in 2020 as Drona.[3]

Plot

Dayalan (Samuthirakani) is a newly appointed teacher of a government school in Vanthaarangudi village near Thiruvannamalai city. He is unhappy with the education system and is also worried about the pitiable condition of education of government schools. After joining the school, he tries to change the school's environment. This is not welcome by Singaperumal (Thambi Ramaiah), who is Assistant Head Master (AHM). Dayalan's decision for the change does not go well with the other teachers and students, but

P. Samuthirakani[1] (born 26 April 1973) is an Indian actor and film director who works predominantly in Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam films. He worked as an assistant to director K. Balachander, in Paarthale Paravasam. He won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor in 2016 for Visaranai,[2][3] he is also an recipient of three Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, a Filmfare Award and a SIIMA award

Early life

Samuthirakani was born on 26 April 1973 in Seithur, Rajapalayam, Tamil Nadu.,[1][4] He did his B.Sc. in Mathematics from the Rajapalayam Rajus College and he also earned a Bachelor of Law from Ambedkar Law College. However, he aimed to become an actor. He has said that people used to tell him that he did not have the physical appearance or talent necessary to be an actor.[5]

Samuthirakani is a film director, singer, screenwriter, dubbing artist, and an Indian actor who works in the Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam film industries.

Samuthirakani studied at Rajapalayam Rajus College and completed his B.Sc. in Mathematics. He also studied at Ambedkar Law College and got his Bachelor of Law.

He was an assistant to director Sundar K. Vijayan in 1997. He also worked as an assistant for K. Balachander for Paarthale Paravasam (2001), which was also his acting debut in Tamil movies and Anni (2001 - 2003).

Samuthirakani ventured into the direction in the early 2000s and made Unnai Charanadaindhen (2003) for S.P.B. Charan. His directed movie Naadodigal (2009) got him appreciation as a filmmaker. This movie earned him the Vijay Award for Favourite Director.

Samuthirakani also appeared as ACP Sangayya in the Tamil movie Easan (2010). He received the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Character Artiste (Male).

He also directed Telegu movies like Sambo Siva Sambho (2010), which was a Remake of Naadodigal (2009), and Janda Pai Kapiraju (2015)
