Biography

Professor Julienne Christine Stroeve is a polar climate scientist known for her research on remote sensing of ice and snow. She is Professor of Polar Observation & Modelling at the Centre for Polar Observation and Modelling, University College London, Senior Canada-150 Research Chair in Climate Forcing of Sea Ice at the University of Manitoba, and a senior research scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center within the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES). She is also a member of the American Geophysical Union and an ISI highly cited researcher.

Professor Stroeve’s research has covered Arctic climate change, sea ice decline, atmosphere-ocean ice interactions, remote sensing, and the impact of climate change on native communities. Her recent work has focused on satellite retrievals of Arctic sea ice, and the implications of changing Arctic sea ice on Earth’s climate. She has published 162 articles.

Julienne C. Stroeve received a PhD in Geography from the University of Colorado Boulder, in 1996, for her work in understanding Greenland climate variability. Subsequently she became a senior research scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) within the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado. In 2017 she moved to University of College London (UCL) where she headed the Centre for Polar Observation and Modelling (CPOM), and in 2018 she was awarded a Canada 150 Research Chair at the University of Manitoba. Her Arctic research interests include atmosphere-sea ice interactions, sea ice predictability, climate change and associated impacts. She has conducted several Arctic field campaigns, and will participate in the upcoming MOSAiC expedition. Julienne C. Stroeve received a PhD in geography from the University of Colorado Boulder, in 1996, for her work in understanding Greenland climate variability. Afterwards she became a senior research scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) within the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at CU-Boulder. In 2016 she moved to University College London and led the Centre for Polar Obsevation and Modelling, and in 2018 was awarded a Canada 150 Excellence Research Chair at the University of Manitoba. In 2023, she was awarded the Helmholtz Fellowship at University of Bremen and the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI). Her Arctic research interests include remote sensing of snow and ice, sea ice forecasting at various time-scales, climate change and impacts of sea ice loss on marine ecosystems and native communities.

She has participated in several field campaigns in Greenland and the Arctic Ocean, including the year-long German-led MOSAiC expedition in 2019/2020. She is also science advisor for Arctic Basecamp, a non-profit that
