Rick D. West – 12th Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (retired)

Rick became the 12th Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) on December 12, 2008, and served until September 28, 2012.

He was born in Rising Fawn, Georgia, and entered the U.S. Navy immediately upon graduating from high school in 1981. After recruit training and quartermaster training in Orlando, Florida, he attended Basic Enlisted Submarine School (Naval Submarine Base New London) in Groton, Connecticut.

His first duty assignment was aboard USS Ethan Allen (SSN 608), where he completed submarine qualifications. Other assignments included USS Thomas Edison (SSN 610), USS Sea Devil (SSN 664), Commander Naval Activities United Kingdom (COMNAVACTUK), USS Tecumseh (SSBN 628)(Blue), and Commander, Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet (COMSUBPAC) Staff (TRE Team).

West was assigned as chief of the boat (COB) aboard the San Diego-based fast-attack submarine USS Portsmouth (SSN 707), where he completed two Western Pacific deployments and was selected to the Command Master Chief (CMC) program. The Ports

The master chief petty officer of the Navy (MCPON) is a unique non-commissioned rank and position of office of the United States Navy, which is designated as a special paygrade above E-9. The holder of this position is the most senior enlisted member of the U.S. Navy, equivalent to the sergeant major of the Army, chief master sergeant of the Air Force, sergeant major of the Marine Corps, master chief petty officer of the Coast Guard, and chief master sergeant of the Space Force. The holder of this rank and position is the most senior enlisted sailor in the Navy, unless an enlisted sailor is serving as the senior enlisted advisor to the chairman. 13th Master Chief Petty Officer of the US Navy

Michael D. Stevens is a United States Navy sailor who served as Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON). He became the 13th MCPON on September 28, 2012, when he accepted the passing of the ceremonial cutlass from outgoing MCPON Rick D. West.[1] He was succeeded by Steven S. Giordano on September 2, 2016.[2]

Early life and education

Stevens grew up in Montana. He graduated from Arlee High School in May 1983.[3]

Stevens holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Excelsior College and has completed: Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government "Leadership in Crisis"; Senior Enlisted Professional Military Education; Senior Enlisted Joint Professional Military Education; and the National Defense University Keystone course.[4]

Stevens is an Honor Graduate and the recipient of the prestigious Peter Tomich Award for exceptional military excellence from the Senior Enlisted Academy.[3]
