USES AND CHARACTERISTICS Thomas Carlyle wrote, “the Life of the lowest mortal if faithfully recorded, would be interesting to the highest.” ( The Works of Thomas Carlyle, New York: Scribner, 1898-1901, 28:86.) Biographies have always been in high demand. They are among the most common references requested in the library. There are 2 categories of biographical sources- direct and indirect: Direct sources Provide biographical information itself. They are divided into 2 types of sources: Biographical Directories – provide brief data about individuals Biographical Dictionaries – offer more detailed information often in essay form Indirect sources Indexes which list citations of biographical information that refer the user to other sources of information. Sources can also be current (living persons) - retrospective (people from the past) narrow (a particular academic field) - broad (national and even international.)

    Atlases

    These are collections of maps in book form. In addition to purely geographical atlases, there are specialized ones for a variety of subjects: history, religion, art, architecture, commercial, diseases, sports, exploration, ocean, stars, etc. Atlases are located on the atlas cases in the reference print collection section.  Examples are Atlas of Boston History, Atlas of World Geography and Atlas of the Great Plains.     Gazetteers

    A listing of geographical features and locations, complete with longitude and latitudes, and short descriptions. Examples include the Historical Gazetteer of the United States and the Utah Atlas & Gazetteer.

     

    Almanacs

    Yearly compilations of facts, dates, and statistics. They can be general or subject specific. Examples include Information Please Almanac, Library and Book Trade Almanac, Old Farmer's Almanac, World Almanac and Book of Facts 2019, and Old Farmer

    Are you interested in learning facts about athletes, historical figures, artists, inventors, musicians, poets, explorers, politicians, or others?  The Biography Reference Source database is available from our website, and it provides biographical information on thousands of individuals.  It is especially helpful if you have general curiosity about these subjects or if you are working on an assignment that requires this type of research.  It can also come in handy if you want to learn more about a person while you are waiting for a book or audiobook to arrive on the holdshelf, or if you are seeking specific information about the more salient parts of someone’s life.

    These biographies draw from other sources, including Biography Today, the Cambridge Dictionary of American Biography, and Encyclopedia Britannica, among others.  There is also a list of Biographies by Genre and a Featured Biography that is rotated frequently.

    Full-text articles are available for many subjects and this database allows you to cite them, save them in a folder for future retrieval, or email them
