Indian freedom fighter

Abbas Tyabji (1 February 1854 – 9 June 1936) was an Indian freedom fighter from Gujarat, and an associate of Mahatma Gandhi. He also served as the Chief Justice of Baroda State. His grandson is historian Irfan Habib.^[2]

Family and background

Abbas Tyabji was born to a Sulaimani BohraArab family of Cambay in Gujarat. He was the son of Shamsuddin Tyabji and grandson of Mullah Tyab Ali, a merchant. His father's elder brother was Badruddin Tyabji, first Indian to become a Barrister later on a judge of the Bombay High Court and an early, loyalist president of the Indian National Congress.

Early life

Abbas Tyabji was born in Baroda State, where his father was in the service of the GaekwadMaharaja. He was educated in England, where he lived for eleven years. His nephew, the ornithologist Salim Ali, says in his autobiography,

2007 Indian biographical drama film

Gandhi, My Father is a 2007 Indianbiographicaldrama film by Feroz Abbas Khan. It was produced by Anil Kapoor, and released on 3 August 2007.

The film stars Darshan Jariwala, Akshaye Khanna, Bhumika Chawla, and Shefali Shah.^[2]

The film explores the troubled relationship between Mahatma Gandhi and his son Harilal Gandhi. The film is based upon the biography of Harilal Gandhi, titled Harilal Gandhi: A Life by Chandulal Bhagubhai Dalal.^[3] Khan's play, Mahatma vs. Gandhi, while different from this film, had a similar theme which was based on a novel by Gujarati author Dinkar Joshi.^[4] The film was shot in South Africa and in several Indian cities, including Mumbai and Ahmedabad.^[5]

New Delhi: On the same date of 1st February in 1854, a legend born called as Abbas Tyabji, the Grand old man of Baroda, Gujarat was an Indian freedom fighter and an associate of Mahatma Gandhi. He was an England-educated barrister, brought up in an atmosphere suffused with loyalty to the Empire.

In 1919, Abbas Tyabji pulled into the national movement due to military violence in Punjab. With the events of 1919 having shaken up the country, Tyabji became a member of the committee set up by the INC to inquire into the military violence.

He had served as the Chief Justice of the Baroda High Court. He was also a key ally and supporter of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel during the 1918 Kheda Satyagraha, and the 1928 Bardoli Satyagraha. He was also a close supporter of Mohandas Gandhi and the Indian National Congress.

Abbas Tyabji attended along with Gandhi so many social conferences. He was appointed by the Indian National Congress as chairman of an independent fact-finding committee. He also adopted many of the Symbols of Gandhi’s Independence movement. Imprisoned often, the movement c
