Stephen Hannock

Stephen Hannock was born in 1951 Albany, New York and lives and works in Williamstown, Massachusetts.

Hannock's singular techniques—extensive layering of color and collaged elements as well as lacquered surfaces that have been buffed to a dreamlike sheen—make each painting, no matter its size, instantly identifiable as his own. This multi-layered approach to painting includes the landscapes of Cole, the stage-like settings of the pre-Raphaelites, and the sweeping panoramas and mis en scène in the films of Alfred Hitchcock. Hannock describes his approach to image-making as "kidnapping vistas," which take on new forms and atmospheres through his painting. He is drawn to the way mood is composed within the work to create a story that is literally written into the fabric of the piece. Hannock’s addition of diaristic texts and photographic images to the mountains, trees and fields comprises his unique contribution to 20th Century landscape painting. Hannock, in essence, interrupts the realism of his land

Back

Stephen Hannock's formal artistic training began at Bowdoin and led him to participate in the Twelve College Exchange, where at Smith College he came under the influence of Leonard Baskin, the renowned sculptor, illustrator, printmaker, and graphic artist. Hannock is deeply influenced by the great American landscape painters of the nineteenth century, especially Thomas Cole, whose sweeping vistas of rugged Eastern terrain were imbued with a sense of the romantic and the sublime. Hannock's dramatic neo-Luminist paintings have been featured in numerous national publications and museum collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego.

Stephen W. Hannock (born March 31, 1951) is an American painter known for his atmospheric landscapes––compositions of flooded rivers, nocturnes and large vistas––which often incorporate text inscriptions that relate to family, friends or events of daily life. The artist is known for creating a unique luminosity[1] using a signature technique that involves building up layers of paint on the canvas, sandpaper-polishing it, applying new layers of paint and polishing again. Some of his work is thought to be inspired by the Hudson River School.[2]

Early life and education

It was at Deerfield Academy (where he spent a post-graduate high school year), that Hannock took his first art class since grade school. He later attended Bowdoin College for two years before taking classes at S
