Shari Lewis (born Phyllis Naomi Hurwitz;[citation needed] January 17, 1933 – August 2, 1998) was a Peabody-winning American ventriloquist, puppeteer, children's entertainer, television show host, dancer, singer, actress, author, and symphony conductor.[1] She famously created and performed the sock puppetLamb Chop for Captain Kangaroo in March 1956.

Who Was Shari Lewis?

Shari Lewis was taught ventriloquism at a young age, and by the early 1950s, she was named a winner on the TV show Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts for her puppetry. In the early 1990s, Lewis became the host of Lamb Chop's Play-Along, which aired on PBS from 1992 to 1997, and received several Emmy Awards. Lewis died in California in 1998.

After developing the sock puppet character "Lamb Chop," Lewis became famous. Lamb Chop, a curious sheep, debuted in the late 1950s—along with several other puppet characters created that Lewis had created, including the slow-speaking "Charlie Horse" and "Hush Puppy"—on the program Hi Mom, which aired on WRCA-TV.

In 1960, Lewis was offered her own show by NBC, The Shari Lewis Show. The show eventually tranformed into Lamb Chop's Play-

Lamb Chop is a ewe puppet, she is a sock puppet first made by Shari Lewis. Shari Lewis was a comedienne and ventriloquist, in 1957 Lamb Chop appeared with Shari Lewis on the television show Captain Kangaroo. During the 1960s, Shari Lewis had her own musical-comedy network television show, The Shari Lewis Show. After most Children's television programs turned to animation, she still continued to perform venues. In 1992 Lamb Chop and Shari Lewis began a television show on PBS called Lamb Chop's Play-Along, an Emmy Award winner for five years.

Lamb Chop is shown to have a teddy bear she named "Mr. Bearly", and an imaginary friend named Maurice Horse, who has an imaginary English bulldog named Farnsworth.

After Shari Lewis' death in 1998, Lamb Chop continues to be performed by Shari's daughter Mallory Lewis.
