Cordell Hull A Biography

Cordell Hull still awaits a decent biographer. He wrote memoirs, but they are a most ponderous
work and are weighted heavily toward his State Department years. This book was written while
he was still Secretary of State and his tenure as the longest serving individual in that post was still
being made.
I nearly fell over when I read the forward by the Under Secretary of State, a man named Sumner Welles who later was forced out of government service by Hull. What a laudatory piece that is from
a guy who was forced out of government service by among others Hull. Forced out lest it be revealed
Welles had a gay side to him.
Hull was born in Tennessee in 1871 and was a veteran of the Spanish-American War and rose up the
ranks in Democratic politics from state office to the House of Representatives in 1911 to the US Senate
in 1931. Only two years into his Senate term, Hull was appointed Secretary of State by Franklin D.
Rooosevelt and he served nearly 12 years.
