Medical Bernard Francisco Ribeiro, Baron Ribeiro,born in Achimota in the Gold Coast (now Ghana), Bernard Ribeiro was educated at Dean Close School, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, and at Middlesex Hospital Medical School.

Now a British surgeon who served as President of the Royal College of Surgeons of England from 2005 to 2008. He was created a life peer in 2010 and sits in the House of Lords on the Conservative benches.

Ribeiro qualified as a doctor at Middlesex Medical School in 1967 and then specialised in surgery, five years later being awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS). From 1979 until his retirement in April 2008, he was consultant general surgeon at Basildon Hospital with a special interest in urology and colorectal surgery, pioneering the use of invasive keyhole surgery, and helping to establish the Basildon and Thurroc

  • Lord Ribeiro also appointed to the Board for one year, to provide medical and public health expertise

Today (12 November 2020) the Minister for Women and Equalities, Liz Truss, has appointed 4 new Commissioners to the Board of the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC).

Jessica Butcher MBE, David Goodhart and Su-Mei Thompson have been appointed to the Board for a period of 4 years. In addition, the former President of the Royal College of Surgeons, Lord Ribeiro, has been appointed to the Board for one year, to help ensure that the EHRC has medical and public health expertise, strengthening its work on equalities and human rights during the Coronavirus pandemic.

The announcement follows the recent appointment of Baroness Kishwer Falkner as the new Chair of the EHRC, subject to the formal scrutiny process.

Leben

Nach dem Besuch der Dean Close School in Cheltenham absolvierte Ribeiro ein Studium der Medizin an der Medizinischen Schule des Middlesex Hospital, das er 1967 als Doktor der Medizin abschloss. Im Anschluss spezialisierte er sich als Facharzt für Chirurgie und Urologie und arbeitete zwischen 1970 und 1972 zunächst als Registrator für Chirurgie am Orsett Hospital in Essex sowie im Anschluss von 1972 bis 1978 als Registrator und zuletzt als Leitender Registrator für Chirurgie am Middlesex Hospital. Daneben war er zwischen 1974 und 1975 auch als Lecturer für Urologie in Accra tätig.

1979 wurde er Beratender Arzt des National Health Service (NHS) in Basildon und wirkte dort bis 2008. Daneben fungierte Ribeiro von 1982 bis 1992 als Mitglied des Beirates der Justizvollzugsanstalt
